Whare Re-opening
On Sunday 13th April, Cashmere High students, staff, alumni, and wider school whānau came together to celebrate the reopening of the school’s beautifully refurbished wharenui, Te iringa o Kahukura. This significant project was made possible thanks to the generous koha of founding pupil, the late Peter Brine, and his wife, the late Dr. Lynne Haye.
Family representative Steve McDonald spoke about Peter’s thirst for learning, nurtured during his time at Cashmere. As his life and career progressed, Peter never forgot the impact the school had on him. When he and Lynne were in a position to give back, they chose to support many causes — among them Cashmere High School and its students.
Past and current akōnga Māori shared their deep connection to the whare — their tūrangawaewae — a place where they can expand their learning and reo, be themselves, and thrive in a supportive environment.
Nei rā te mihi ki te whānau o Peter Brine rāua ko Dr. Lynne Haye – thank you for helping us preserve this taonga for future generations.
